REPRESENTATION OF IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES ON FRANCOPHONE TELEVISION IN QUEBEC A strategic opportunity

The physical and symbolic representation of immigrant communities on Francophone television has important sociopolitical implications in so far as television can be considered as an important medium for cultural actions aimed at the social integration of new arrivals in the host society. This article analyses a corpus concerning the perceptions of Quebecois Francophone groups and groups formed from members of immigrant communities, regarding Francophone television in Quebec. In particular, the authors attempt to answer the following question: Can the increase of the presence of representatives of immigrant communities in Francophone TV programmes in Quebec help to change the social image of that television and thereby increase its appeal and audiences in immigrant communities?
