MOBILE VISUAL MESSAGES New technology and interaction

In typical scenarios of the future mobile society, sending photographs in the form of postcards and video-clips is commonplace. In these scenarios "mobile" images are an integral part of our daily lives, even more so than SMS today. This article studies interactions mediated by mobile images - digital photos sent via a radio network - with a view to describing how this technology is used. The authors compare these uses to other more traditional uses of photos in order to define the specific nature of mobile images more clearly. This enables them to resituate communication via images in the more general context of the emerging mobile society. The thesis they develop is inspired partly by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis. They show that the production of mobile images is a carefully organized practice, adjusted to contexts. Mobile images are used extensively to share experiences and emotions rather than to organize and control activities and relations.
