The Age of Copiers: Potential Economic Implications

Young copiers of the Netgen (Internet generation), who are heavy users of content, are often accused of being the main cause of the music industry's current problems concerning piracy and e-commerce. The issue of merchandization of culture is consequently no longer limited to the question of the extension of copyright according to type of use. It also encompasses the question of users' socio-economic characteristics and especially their age. Questioning the idea of a 'copier's life cycle'?, this paper analyses the strategies and policies needed to control copying in a digital context.
