INEGALITARIAN TECHNOLOGIES? INTEGRATION OF INTERNET INTO THE DOMESTIC SPHERE AND RELATIONAL PRACTICES

'Digital inequalities'? are often ascribed to stable, all-encompassing characteristics of people and machines. This study, by contrast, relates them to the technical devices used by Internauts: email, web, forums, etc. The decisive role of identities and relations mediated by computing and electronic equipment is revealed through an examination of use itineraries. The inscription of each tool in identity-related and interactional behaviours reorganizes them and, especially in the case of interpersonal communication, orientates the temporal evolution and helps to regularize uses. Since the use of these tools requires resources that are not equally distributed, social disparities in levels of equipment and use are highlighted.
