The current significance of issues concerning visibility and invisibility stems largely from profound changes in the forms of relationship and interaction triggered by the impact of the communication media on contemporary societies. Public attention to an issue depends on a multitude of technical and discursive mediations, the most important of which are the media. They help to define an order of the visible that reveals certain realities or actors while condemning others to invisibility. In certain conditions social inexistence, which often goes hand in hand with media invisibility, can generate struggles for visibility intended to change the graded categories of public attention and social esteem.
