Content Industries on the Media Scene

By Claire Moriset, Bernard Miège
English

In a fast-changing technological, politico-economic and financial context, the culture and information industries are undergoing profound change characterized by: increasing financialization that raises the question of pluralism of ideas and democracy; a process of concentration that de facto undermines independent production; an acceleration of internationalization; an upsurge of advertising; the development of multi-mediatization entailing new cultural practices and consumption; and the questioning of cultural policy. This article shows how the press, on the whole fairly uniform, accounts for these changes, relays information and communicates the meaning it gives to events. Such conventional treatment leaves very little space for questions by researchers.
