THE NORMATIVE WORK OF NARRATIVE. THE IMPORTANCE OF RECOGNITION IN THE NEWS NARRATIVE

This article proposes a combination of the usual problematiques of the theory of narrative and certain hypotheses of theories of recognition. Based on the idea that narrative is rooted in a practical semantics of ordinary experience, the author highlights the fact that the normative field of social experience is also involved. News narratives can thus be apprehended as operators of recognition which participate in a normative process of deciding between social esteem and low esteem or contempt. If it is true that the news narrative serves as mediation between a community and its own intelligibility, this explains that political tension and social conflict cannot under any circumstances spare it.
