MONITORING, CONTROL, ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT Four Forms of management in industries

In 1997 nearly a third of all workers in the industrial sector considered that they had a supervisory function. After several decades of discourse on the benefits of self-management, firms - at least in industry - still need supervisors. But the scale and nature of managerial responsibilities vary from one supervisor to the next, depending on qualification, job status, seniority, gender and social background. In this article the author considers four figures of industrial workers who claim to have '?one or several persons at [their] disposal or under [their] authority'. Managerial, administrative, supervisory and monitoring staff are then the four empirically identified types of management staff in industry.
