TELEVISION'S CREATION OF A STAR Loft Story as seen by the sociologist

Young singers spawned by reality television are making a spectacular entry onto the contemporary pop music scene. Sometimes unknown, they first appear on our TV screens by participating in programmes such as Loft Story and Star Academy. Within months they become celebrities whose fame the entertainment industry readily exploits. One of the main functions of these currently proliferating TV programmes is to create stars ex nihilo, to produce idols and celebrities. The author's study of the programme Loft Story enables him to account for the means and processes used in this transformation from anonymity to stardom.
