USA - WEBLOGS REVIVE THE QUESTION OF JOURNALISTIC IDENTITY

Developed outside the mainstream media, news weblogs in the US question the group identity of journalists. This article analyses certain identity features through the historical discursive production of the professional group and of the more contemporary group of news webloggers. A recent case in which Apple sued site managers illustrates and crystallizes certain identity-related issues, such as the importance of socialization, the notion of objectiveness, the weight of the First Amendment and of the social accountability of the media. These are explored and called into question, but sometimes even reinforced by news webloggers.
