Telepresence or the Other Video-telephony

By Marc Relieu
English

Video-communication is used in widely diverse fields (telemedicine, conferences, domestic calls), technologies (dedicated rooms, software on personal computers, etc.) and networks. What does this dispersion mean from the point of view of usage and of the organization of distant interactions? This article analyses several experiments in videocommunication. It highlights the apparatus of tele-presence consisting of interactional practices based on artefacts in different types of place (public sphere, firm, home). By studying the way in which represented or real users of three video-communication devices deal with related interactional problems (openings, reference to third persons, etc.) in very different contexts, the author characterizes a tradition without developing a model.
