SOCIABILITIES AND WORKING-CLASS FAMILIES A socio-ethnography of making contact

This article focuses on sociability in working-class families. By sociability the author is referring to two of the main dimensions of the social link: elective relations (family, romantic, friends, etc.) which form the link between individuals with specific characteristics (age, sex, social position, etc.); and concrete forms of contact which actualize those relations (fixed and mobile telephony, SMS, email, instant messaging, face-to-face). This approach to sociabilities, which takes into account both relations and contacts, is rarely adopted in either the analysis of social networks or that of social uses of information and communication technologies (ICT).
