RADIO IN WEST AFRICA - AN UNDERESTIMATED 'MEDIA CROSSROADS'?? The example of Burkina Faso

The idea that radio in West Africa has been underestimated may seem surprising, considering how its role in African societies has been celebrated. The aim of this article is not to contradict it, but rather to clarify it and to renew the arguments supporting it. The study of media in Africa is characterized by a Westernization of perspectives which tends to distort the facts. By renewing the notion of accessibility, refocusing the analysis on audiences, and integrating current media practices like press reviews in African languages, this article highlights radio's original role today as a media crossroads.
