ALTERNATIVE VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS OF SOCIAL NETWORKS

Visually representing complex data such as social networks facilitates their understanding. For over seventy years, the representations used to visualize networks or graphs have been node-link diagrams. While these representations are common and can be qualified as intuitive, their readability deteriorates considerably when the size or density of the networks increases. In this article the authors present several alternatives to node-link diagrams. In particular, they detail a series of hybrid representations based on the matrix-based representations of graphs. These novel representations make it possible to visualize larger and denser networks, opening new avenues for the visual exploration of social networks.
