Fan F(r)ictions

Identity and Relational Tensions with Authors of Fan Fiction
By Sébastien François
English

Mostly published on the Internet since the 1990s, fan fictions are the sequels, prequels or other alternative stories that some enthusiastic viewers or readers write to expand their favourite media products. Based on the study of fan fictions inspired by the Harry Potter franchise, this article examines this kind of creative activity which requires a heavy personal investment, and highlights the tensions that each fan experiments individually and in contact with others. By considering the texts in relation to their authors, the way their future readers are anticipated, and the process by which they are put on line, the article is an attempt to discuss the notion of 'attachment'? and to restore its complexity.
