A Season in the Castle

Varia
An Ethnography of "Real Set" Television Shootings
By Sabine Chalvon-Demersay
English

This article reports on an ethnographic study of the filming of TV fiction in the particular d?cor of castles. It describes the forms of cooperation that develop between the TV crews and the owners, and examines the agreements between these different actors with sharply contrasting social situations, habits, behaviours, manners, constraints and priorities: those who temporarily occupy these castles to put them at the service of a fictional representation, and those who have lived there for generations.
The study consists of an observation of fiction in the making, put to the test of social relations.
