Playing Video Games with Style: For an Ethnography of Video Game Sociability

English

Starting out from three ethnographic fields, this paper proposes a close observation of video game practices. In gaming, social forms and especially styles of play are constituted through repetition. Thus, as in many popular forms of game, repetition plays a key part in video games. The author describes three styles, through their birth and sharing, to highlight the multiplicity of ways open to stylization. The singularity of these styles, which emerge from local exploration of what constitutes a good time, can leave those who discover them in the public sphere surprised, indifferent, shocked or interested.
