While ICTs have gradually made their way into the world of the contemporary traveller, little research has sought to understand how they have contributed to transforming the experience of travelling. This article describes extensive fieldwork carried out with adventure travellers desperately trying to disconnect from ICTs. The respondents, who sought to experience modern travelling with, in particular, a temporary break from everyday life, revealed the difficulty of escaping their role and status in a world where the connection imperative prevails. Persistently solicited by their families, the travellers interviewed had hoped for total disconnection, but ultimately opted for partial disconnection as a compromise that attests to the emergence of a new hypermodern travelling experience.
