The Management and Market Implications of Individuals’ Participation in Innovation

Co-innovation platforms are online systems that big companies started to develop in the mid-2000s, in the wake of the Web 2.0, to integrate consumers in the innovation process. We show that the rise of these platforms, presented as new open and collaborative spaces, entirely devoted to Internet users’ creativity, is also driven by factors other than the co-design of new products and services. Our analysis of the socio-technical frame of reference of these platforms reveals that management by the client, capturing clients, and knowledge of the market also play a fundamental role.
