Media Scenes and Arenas of Discourse

Internet of the Far Rights
Forms of Engagement in a Lost World
By Christine Servais
English

This article examines the political effectiveness of two devices – the “Riposte laïque” (“secular retaliation”) website and the Facebook page of “Français de Souche” (“of French extraction”) – in relation to the distinction between “agonistic conflict” and “antagonistic conflict” proposed by Chantal Mouffe. What is the nature of the collective that they are targeting and configuring? This question cannot be answered without examining the relations between these media devices and those they address. The author therefore analyses the forms of enunciation in a study of the arenas in which far-right collectives appear, the forms of engagement that this scene mobilizes, and its specific ways of building an “us” characterized by the loss of common objects.
