During the 2016 presidential election period in the USA, a rumour that Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager had organized child sex traffic in a Washington pizzeria was reported on Internet. This so-called PizzaGate rumour was based on several types of documents accessible online, that were reinterpreted and re-exploited in various ways: emails by officials of the Democratic Party exhumed from Wikileaks; photos of the restaurant owner taken from his Instagram account; and search warrants by Scotland Yard linked to a facial reconstruction software programme. An analysis of these sources illustrates the documentary component of online politics that is often overlooked and that can be used to reinforce conspiratorial discourses and political agitation more generally.
