To date, the conditions in which European video game industries were born have scarcely been documented. This study of the birth of the French videogame industry, in particular around 1983, sheds light on several features that are characteristic, first and foremost, of European and national dynamics: the development of the videogame industry on micro-computers, the importance of hobbyism, the place of educational software in the French software industry, and state support to national production. An analysis of these characteristics affords a better understanding of the national industry’s current features.
