This article creates a typology within the category of 'the average French person'? often called on to represent the public on television programmes. Based on an analysis of these programmes since 1958, classified into families, the author systematically compares the sociology of the guests with that of the country as a whole. He shows how the competencies that explain their difference function as a tool to renew social stratification.
