AGENCY STYLE AND THEMATIC SPECIALIZATIONS. The example of Agence France Presse journalists

Based on the concept of journalistic style, the author uses the example of Agence France-Presse to highlight the very particular characteristics of the work of news agency journalists (tracking down news and primacy of facts which can lead to a journalism consisting in straight reporting of facts, and tension between rhetoric of objectivity and rhetoric of critical expertise in the agency's formatting of news). By studying the columnists of specialized sections at AFP, at the intersection between functional specialization (agency journalism) and several thematic specializations (political journalism, social journalism, sports journalism), he then shows the predominance, among these columnists, of an agency style but also of distinctly different specialization-related styles. This shows the relevance of taking into account thematic specialization in agency style.
