EMERGENT, DIVERGENT? Mobile cultures

This paper draws on results of empirical studies undertaken in Finland, and on the author's own qualitative research on use of the mobile telephone, with a particular focus on WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) and SMS (Short Message Service) services. It examines the low adoption rate of WAP and, more generally, of use of interactional mobile services, despite a context of fast adoption of mobile technologies in that country. It also considers three emerging, interrelated trends in mobile communications R&D: strategic shift in focus from the technology as such to customer-oriented technology; a move from freestanding mobile services to user-support mobile services; and diversification of technical platforms and services in line with the expansion of customer segments.
