Spatial Dimensions of the Digital Divide in France

By Sophie Houzet, Loïc Grasland
English

How is the organization of space involved in the digital divide? The authors posit that the organization of ICTs takes into account existing spatial structures. The diffusion of these technologies corresponds to a logic of economic profitability but is confronted with the principle of territorial equity. A cartographic analysis of the distribution of ICTs is proposed in terms of networks, on a national and regional scale, in three areas - infrastructure, services and uses - in which the use of ICTs corresponds to different logics. The result is an original image of multiple digital divides.
