Transformations of the Traffic Reporting Market (1970-2007)
By Ivan Chupin, Nicolas Hubé
English

Traffic information is not only a radio product; it can be analysed in terms of changes in public policies and data collection techniques. When the French national centre for traffic information was created, several actors were needed to produce traffic data: government, the police, transport agencies and journalists. For a long time traffic information was defined as a public service, universal and free. Today, car manufacturers try to sell such information. This article analyses changes in the traffic information market and in the role of the state, along with the arrival of commercial actors.
