Techniques, Use, and Representations

By Patrice Flichy
English

This article re-examines the use of the technical objects of communication. It first discusses how the sociology of techniques, the sociology of the media, the sociology of domestic ICT, and research on information systems management approach the question of use. In light of these different approaches, the author then considers the frame of use model. This model has two functions: a cognitive and symbolic function, and the fact of serving to organize actors' interactions both with the technical object, and between themselves. Finally, the author presents the different modes of alliance between users and designers.
