The Local Press as Entertainment

By Loïc Ballarini

Local news in France appears to be varied and neutral. However, an analysis of the content of the regional press in Brittany shows, on the contrary, that it is still coloured by a highly stratified view of the world in which social stability is celebrated. Of a society consisting of inter-relations and dynamic processes, it reflects only a juxtaposition of micro-events out of context. The result is a widening gap between the world that regional newspapers present to their readers and those readers' reality. By shifting the focus from the depth and diversity of society to a construction of social relations simplified to the extreme, the regional press ultimately seems to be a form of entertainment.
