Generalizing Narration: A Television Milestone?

Whereas for a long time TV series were characterized by a quest for realism, the past five years have witnessed the appearance of series that clearly play on their fictional dimension. A new figure has emerged, giving these series a distinctly literary flavour: the narrative voice that introduces and/or concludes episodes. Based on an analysis of Sex & the City, Desperate Housewives, Medium, Grey's Anatomy, Kyle XY, Heroes and Gossip Girl, we see how this process, in stark contrast with the quest for authenticity in the previous decade, makes each story a real narrative, a metaphor.
