A Critique of Sameness

Special Report: Revisiting Adorno
On the Practical Relationship Between Culture and the Individual in Adorno's Theory
By Julia Christ
English

In this study the author sets out to reframe Adorno's critique of culture. She shows that its target, often seen to be the content of cultural products, is primarily the 'commodification'? of a culture turned into an object. With Adorno the world of culture is understood in the Freudian sense of 'civilization'?, where this objectification of the cultural signifies the material impossibility, for individuals, to participate in cultural practices that belong to them. It is this exclusion of individuals from common actions that lies at the centre of his critique. From a methodological point of view, Adorno's core question is therefore 'what does culture make individuals from a particular cultural environment do'??
