Social Physiognomy or Culture Industry?

Special Report: Revisiting Adorno
Adorno and the Critique of Christian Radio
By Paul Apostolidis
English

A retrospective critique of Theodor W. Adorno's article 'The Psychological Technique of Martin Luther Thomas' Radio Addresses'? sheds new light on an often underestimated tension in his thinking, concerning the capacity of mass culture to express resistance to domination. By analysing the beginnings of Christian right-wing radio in a way that was coherent with his defence of the autonomous dimension of culture, Adorno went beyond a denunciation of mass culture as a culture industry. This study was also part of his preparatory work on the theory of the culture industry, which guided the conclusions. The present critique confirms Adorno's ambivalence regarding the negative aptitudes of mass culture. His approach draws as much on the theory of the culture industry as on a modified version of the immanent critique method that serves to identify dialectically the ideological elements as well as the periods of resistance of present-day Christian right-wing radio.
