The "Gender" of Satire
By Marlène Coulomb-Gully
English

In this article the author illuminates the gendered imaginary underlying the representation of gender in Les Guignols de l'Info, the emblematic French programme on the TV channel Canal Plus. Her analysis of the programme reveals, if not a deliberately reactionary posture on the part of the authors, then at least the 'gender blind'? character of the enterprise. Far from the progressive image usually associated with the programme, Les Guignols confirm, perhaps unwillingly, that they 'unwittingly'? (à l'insu de leur plein gr?, a now-famous expression) see the normative expectations of a comic enunciation uttered from a predominantly masculine point of view, where women are the objects rather than the subjects of the joke. In the end, the enunciatory fuzziness peculiar to parody ensures that audiences with the most diverse expectations enjoy the programme, as its satirical dimension serves the channel's need for audiences.
