Music and Technologies in the Digital Era
By Philippe Le Guern
English

As a contribution to the study of the relationship between art and techniques, this article analyzes the shift from the analogue regime to the digital regime, along with the idea of progress in music. Taking as examples several ideal-type technologies - the sampler, the home studio and the Auto-tune software - it shows not only how they have altered our ways of making music, by giving us new functionalities and ergonomy, but even more fundamentally, how they engage us in a new metaphysics by reconfiguring our sense of space-time, our conception of the author and creation, and the values traditionally associated with the world of rock.
