Playing in the Laboratory: Video Games at Universities (1962-1979)

Special Report

English

The early history of video games started with games at university and in educational institutions-a period which has largely been overlooked by the existing historiography, apart from some exceptional cases like Spacewar or adventure games in text mode. The purpose of this paper is to catalogue university games for the first time. The author not only writes a history of different forms of game, but also analyzes the link between these forms and their context of production and practice. Video games at universities correspond to a specific "experiential regime" characterized by a particular relationship to time, simulation, and codes.
