Analysing the Presence of Career Politicians on Conversational Programmes

Over time, the idea of inviting career politicians to appear on television has come to be taken for granted and is rarely questioned. Yet the sudden appearance of entertainment programmes affords an opportunity to investigate the classification of TV programmes that receive political guests – particularly in view of the increasing hybridization of the TV offer, which strongly challenges the established distinction between “political programmes” and “entertainment”. It is likewise necessary, in the counting of TV invitations, to include the composition and volume of the guest’s political capital. The practical implications thereof can thus be grasped, and it becomes clear that the televised political invitation is the result of a – temporary – compromise between two social worlds.
