A History of Spam

This article studies the strange and vast world of spam and its role in the evolution of virtual communities and Internet governance. It argues that spam feeds on the tension between virtual communities and the technological infrastructure underpinning them. The exploits of spam highlight both the complex relationship between virtual communities and the governments in which they interfere, and the evolution of online attention policies.
