By Olivia Legrip-Randriambelo

This article describes and analyses the new ritual configurations proposed by Malagasy diviner-healers. In addition to healing sessions in treatment rooms, some of them have adjusted their practices to remote patients, offering telephone consultations. First, the article investigates mobile phones as an element associated with magical-religious ritual practices. Second, it considers why and how Malagasy diviner-healers have taken up this tool. Two factors determine the use of rituals over the phone: expanding one’s patient base (through advertising or acquaintance networks), and keeping patients at a distance.
