New practices and representations

In the face of chronic cuts to public subsidies for cultural institutions, particularly museums, patronage appears to offer a resource to stay afloat. Digital technology has allowed for the emergence of new individual patronage tools. Based on an online questionnaire and a series of interviews, we carried out a comprehensive inventory of these tools and practices, both online and offline. We can see that museums are gradually moving away from traditional subscriptions, turning rather to crowdfunding platforms and other new methods. While this shift in practices does not change museums’ financial capacities, in their view it does enable them to mobilize younger or more distant contributors.
