Based on data collected under the ANR INEDUC programme (“Inequalities in education and living environments. Construction of life trajectories of 13-15-year-olds”), this research examines teenagers’ videogame practices from a gender perspective. It shows that adolescents’ practices correspond to gendered social expectations, and that there is a hierarchical relationship between the sexes, as well as videogame practices that are unequally valued according to whether or not they belong to the historically legitimate male gender or not. Finally, the findings show that girls’ entry into this male playground is socially determined and is accompanied by testimonies devaluing their practices.
