This presentation of the dossier “Television: Industries and Programmes” considers in more general terms the main socio-economic trends in the industry since the turn of the twenty-first century. It reviews the following: the group logic underpinning the proliferation of channels with digital terrestrial television (DTT); the related programming strategies such as narrowcasting, drawing on transnational formats of series and reality shows; the strengthening of the tendency to outsource production, which nevertheless varies according to the type of programme; and the versatility of the tasks incumbent on journalistic and artistic personnel, who have to come to terms with the influence of technology, including on audiences. Together, these trends reflect a dual movement of fragmentation and recomposition in the television industry, which on the whole has been disrupted by the digital environment.
