FROM SOCIOLOGY TO DISCOURSE ANALYSIS, AND BACK AGAIN Homage to Jean Widmer
As a homage to Jean Widmer, this article presents some key aspects of his thinking. The originality of his approach was above all his refusal to instrumentalize discourse analysis as an inquiry technique, and his wish to make it an essential driver of all sociological research. Far from any dogmatism, this approach enabled him to show that the principles of ethnomethodology could be implemented to study macro-social phenomena, especially the institution of political collectives.
