The digital mediation of sexual and emotional relationships at work
In a context where the increasing use of digital tools in the workplace is blurring boundaries between the professional and private spheres, this article examines the role of digital technology in sexual and emotional relationships between colleagues. Based on a study consisting of 64 interviews, mainly with employees of architecture firms and video game studios, it examines how they use digital devices – whether prescribed or used secretly – to engage in flirting and seduction in the workplace. While they continue to alternate with moments of co-presence, interactions on professional messaging services or personal social media allow these relationships to develop discreetly. The article then examines how digital technology is also reshaping women’s exposure to advances and sexual content that is sometimes inappropriate or degrading. Companies are however required to regulate sexual harassment in the workplace, including when it occurs on workplace digital platforms. Digital media are thus reshaping the ways in which women deal with harassment, making it easier to provide evidence, while also raising fears among employees that their right to privacy at work is being undermined.
