With and against AI

This article examines the use of generative artificial intelligence programmes by the Reconquête party, its supporters and more broadly by activists within the identitarian movement. In a context where most of these programmes (Midjourney, Dall-E, ChatGPT) are described as ’woke’ by our subjects – meaning controlled by political enemies –, we analyse how they are used and subverted to produce activist content. The study is based on an ethnography of identitarian digital spheres, conducted on X from October 2023 to August 2025, combined with a composite corpus: media discourse by Reconquête members, official party communication material, activist posts, AI-generated visual and musical content, and interviews.
