CANAL PLUS - MORE LEGITIMACY? Processes of cultural consecration through the media and advertising

This article, which examines television as an instrument of cultural consecration, draws essentially on the example of a literary work, Truismes by Marie Darrieussecq, and a television programme, Nulle Part Ailleurs on Canal Plus. The latter programme is known to have contributed substantially to the recognition of Darrieussecq and her first work, a book which has some of the characteristics of an area in the cultural field known as limited production. The authors of the article explore how this book and its author have benefited from the support of the showcase programme of a pay-TV channel. Apart from the adjustments of the former to the requirements of the latter, this study shows above all how a cultural "product" of this type contributes to the programme that is supposed to promote it, in other words, the consecration of the consecrator by the consecrated.
