QUEST FOR AN AUDIENCE AND TACTICS FOR NURTURING LOYALTY A sociology of work and artistic use of NICT

Net art has developed outside traditional institutions of dissemination and reception of contemporary art. Its presence on the Web has promoted original ways of showing and disseminating work, and these initial experiences in 'exhibiting'? have led artists to embark on the quest for a new audience. The question of types of relations to the works is raised, along with that of identification of this audience, on which the actualization of this art form depends. How is the anticipation of these uses made possible? Which contracts and strategies for nurturing loyalty stem from artistic attempts to know the participants? In this context, can specific 'relations with the public'? be qualified? Based on case studies, this article puts forward some answers to these questions by illuminating reconfigurations of 'artistic work'? in relation to information and communication technologies.
