The Internet and the Conventions of Amorous Encounters

Dating websites seem to be a mode of coordination that matches a networked society where individuals' worth depends above all on the ability to take themselves in hand and to see their life as a project. These sites nevertheless pose two main problems that can be analyzed in terms of the categories of the economy of conventions. They imply the need to avoid a calculative logic, while the design of the websites, like that of the systems for matching up people that they propose, are tailored to the identification of equivalences and the processing of profiles in terms of their properties. They then lead to a renunciation of the abundance of possibilities proposed, to take into account the limited nature of people's attention and to allow different emotional levels to be expressed. Finally, it is towards a shift in the tests of dating and to the competencies mobilized in order to succeed that the use of dating sites steers users.
